Growths on the face and areas around the eyelid can be benign or malignant (cancerous). The most common type of skin cancer around the eyelid is basal cell carcinoma. While our practice works with the best dermatologists in the city to address these skin cancers, some lesions may just be benign growths that do not require further treatment. However, the aesthetic removal of these lesions is critical to avoid disfigurement or significant scar. We are the only plastic surgery practice in San Diego that removes lesions around and on the eyelids everyday. Lesions are often removed under a slit lamp microscope or loupe magnification to minimize the scar. Our clients for this procedure include several people in the public eye and in television as well as other surgeons. Growths around the eyelid are regularly sent to pathology to confirm the diagnosis and to make sure they are not skin cancer. Following the removal of an eyelid lesion, we send the specimen to pathology, and see patients back in two weeks to make sure they are healing properly and to review the pathology report.
