Procedures - Ptosis Repair

Ptosis is one of the most common conditions for referral to an oculoplastic surgeon. Dr. Iyengar is one of the most experienced ptosis surgeons in San Diego. Eyelid ptosis refers to an actual drooping of the eyelid, and is different from excess skin that is treated with upper eyelid blepharoplasty. The levator is the main muscle that is responsible for elevating the eyelid and it often weakens with age, but ptosis can also occur due to trauma or neurological conditions. The surgical treatment for eyelid ptosis may involve strengthening the levator muscle or it may often be treated by tightening the muscle on the underside of the eyelid with no external incisions or scars. During your eyelid evaluation, Dr. Iyengar will determine which approach is best. Ptosis repair is an outpatient procedure and patients do not need to wear an eye patch.
